Why join Albert Invent?

Picture every chemistry lab running its research on one AI operating system, with new materials reaching the test bench faster. Albert Invent, based in Oakland, California, sells that AI for chemistry R&D, and its $55M Series B, led by Index Ventures and Coatue, brings total funding to $105M. That round beats 57% of its stage peers, and 23 open roles, 11 of them in engineering, point to a team still growing fast.

JustBacked's take, based on Albert Invent's own site and its funding and hiring data.

Albert helps chemists change the world by building technology that understands how they work. As chemists ourselves, we know what it’s like when software doesn’t work the way you do — stuck with systems built by people who never spent a day at the bench. That’s why we created Albert OS, the first AI-native operating system for materials science, designed to remove every obstacle between curiosity and discovery.

We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our Regulatory team and set the technical direction for the systems that make scientific data trustworthy, structured, and globally compliant.

What you'll do
  • Own the technical architecture of core regulatory services: Safety Data Sheet generation, rule engine, substance data, and third-party regulatory integrations for enterprise partners across global markets
  • Define engineering standards for correctness, clarity, and long-term maintainability across the Regulatory team, and hold that bar through design reviews, code reviews, and architectural guidance
  • Drive spec-first engineering culture: author and review technical specs, treat data correctness as a first-class concern, and set the example for how the team approaches ambiguous problems
  • Own architectural decisions on regulatory systems in close partnership with Product and Customer Success
  • Lead regulatory triage and scoping conversations, translating complex, ambiguous requirements into structured delivery plans, and owning execution with minimal overhead
  • Design and implement scalable backend services in Node.js and TypeScript on AWS
  • Design and build agentic workflows to orchestrate data across systems
  • Mentor senior engineers and raise the technical ceiling of the team
What you bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 12+ years of backend engineering experience, with a track record of technical leadership at scope
  • Deep expertise in Node.js (preferred), Python, or TypeScript
  • Hands-on experience with AWS: Lambda, ECS/EKS, DynamoDB, RDS, API Gateway
  • Strong grasp of data pipeline concepts, ETL/ELT workflows, and SQL/NoSQL database governance
  • Experience designing and building agentic workflows to orchestrate data across systems
  • Fluency with AI-assisted development tools (Cursor or similar)
  • Strong written communication: you document decisions, not just code
  • Comfortable with high autonomy: you create clarity, not escalations
  • No regulatory background required. Intellectual curiosity and structured thinking matter more
Key competencies
  • Rigor: You treat data correctness as non-negotiable. AI makes mistakes confidently, and our partners won't accept hand-waving
  • Builder mindset: You want to create systems others depend on and trust
  • Curiosity: You care about how your work connects to scientific discovery
  • Adaptability: You're comfortable in a fast-moving environment where priorities shift
Why Albert
  • Trusted by thousands of users from day one, with real revenue and real impact
  • A small, empowered team built on flexibility and collaboration, not hierarchy
  • A culture where creativity and outcomes matter more than titles
  • A global, diverse team working toward a more sustainable future
  • We hire on Fundamentals, Attitude, diverse Thinking, and Experience (FATE)
