Power Electronics Lead

About American Supercritical
American Supercritical is making heat to valuable to waste. We are building a new generation of power plants for a world that desperately needs electricity. We’re developing supercritical CO2 turbomachinery that can turn today’s gas turbines into dramatically more efficient combined-cycle systems initially for the fast-growing data center market. These same systems can also transform how SMRs, geothermal plants, concentrated solar plants, thermal batteries, and industrial processes convert heat to electricity.
We’re a team of energy, aerospace, and power-generation veterans building real machines to solve hard problems in energy. We’re looking for exceptional engineers who want broad ownership, fast iteration cycles, and the opportunity to help define both the product and the company.
Role Overview
The Power Electronics Lead owns the path from generator terminals through power conversion and into the customer electrical interface. You will define the conversion architecture, shape the generator interface with the electric-machine and controls teams, lead internal and vendor design programs, and validate the system at power.
We expect a high-speed generator with active rectification into a DC architecture, but we want you to challenge assumptions and choose the right implementation. This role sits at the intersection of electric machines, converter hardware, controls, protection, thermal management, and customer integration.
Responsibilities
Own the power-electronics architecture, requirements, interfaces, supplier execution, and validation for the generator output path.
Define active-rectification and DC-bus architecture in close collaboration with electric-machine, controls, and system engineers.
Make system-level tradeoffs among generator voltage and frequency, semiconductor topology, switching strategy, efficiency, thermal management, harmonics, protection, packaging, and cost.
Specify semiconductors, power modules, magnetics, capacitors, bus structures, sensing, protection hardware, cooling, and other critical converter components.
Own electrical interface requirements with customers and external vendors, and lead statements of work, design reviews, acceptance criteria, qualification, and technical issue resolution.
Develop electrical and loss models, lead converter bring-up and high-power validation, and troubleshoot controls, EMI/EMC, thermal, switching, protection, and machine-interface issues during commissioning.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
5+ years developing medium- or high-power power electronics that progressed from design into tested hardware.
Strong fundamentals in converter topologies, semiconductor switching, gate drives, magnetics, DC-link design, sensing, protection, thermal management, and power quality.
Experience with active rectifiers, inverters, motor drives, grid converters, or comparable multi-kilowatt to megawatt power-conversion systems.
Experience commissioning power electronics on real hardware and debugging switching, controls, thermal, EMI/EMC, or protection issues.
Strong system-level judgment across converter hardware, control behavior, electric-machine interfaces, supplier execution, and customer requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
Experience with high-speed generators, motor drives, starter-generators, or turboelectric systems.
Experience with SiC or other wide-bandgap power semiconductors.
Experience with data-center electrical systems, UPS architecture, DC distribution, or customer-side power integration.
Benefits & Compensation
Meaningful equity ownership in an early-stage company.
100% of employee medical premiums and 80% of dependent medical premiums covered.
100% employer-paid dental and vision coverage.
Employer-paid basic life insurance and long-term disability coverage.
401(k) retirement plan.
Unlimited PTO that we actually expect you to take.
8 weeks of paid parental leave.
Significant ownership of real hardware.
A beautiful view of the Rocky Mountains from the office.
