Senior Diagnostics Mechanical Engineer

Why join Commonwealth Fusion Systems?
This could be huge if fusion stops being a lab project and becomes grid power, and Commonwealth Fusion Systems, a Cambridge, Massachusetts fusion energy company, is building the machine meant to prove it. A win here means utilities and heavy industry could buy clean, round-the-clock power from far smaller machines. A $1.0B round from Temasek and Khosla Ventures, with 123 open roles, 56 added in 30 days, shows the build is accelerating.

Join the power movement as a Senior Diagnostics Mechanical Engineer
Commonwealth Fusion Systems is assembling the high-field SPARC tokamak, which aims to be the first magnetic fusion device to achieve net fusion energy, and is predicted to be able to achieve high gain and fusion power up to 140 MW. We are completing the design and have begun the assembly and installation of diagnostic systems that will be used to control the plasma and deliver the scientific data necessary to complete the design of ARC. These include approximately 40 sub-systems covering magnetics, interferometry, neutral pressure, x-ray to visible spectroscopy, camera imaging, bolometry, neutrons, Thomson scattering, electron cyclotron emission, reflectometry, Langmuir probes and structural temperature and strain sensing. CFS is looking to grow the SPARC team in order to complete the mechanical design and integration of these diagnostic systems as they move through design closeout, analysis, procurement, test, and installation. At present we’re finalizing the design and starting assembly for many of the front-end, in vacuum measurement devices and are looking to add multi-faceted support to help carry those designs across the finish line, take on engineering challenges associated with their build and test, and help design the structural components associated with ex-vessel data transmission to our diagnostic labs. Candidates will work as part of an integrated diagnostic team along with fusion scientists and other engineers to demonstrate net energy from a tokamak for the first time. CFS encourages applications from both senior and early career engineers and those interested in cross-industry career changers to help us build a diverse team to meet our mission goals. #LI-OnsiteAt CFS, we excel in fast-paced environments, driven by our values of integrity, execution, impact, and self-critique. As we grow, we’re eager to bring on mission-driven folks who offer diverse perspectives and fresh ways to tackle challenges. We value diversity deeply and are proud to be an equal opportunity employer by choice. We consider all qualified applicants equally, regardless of race, color, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, protected veteran status, religion, physical or mental disability, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or any other basis protected by law. This role requires compliance with U.S. laws concerning the export of controlled or protected technologies or information (collectively, “Export Control Laws"). Any offer of employment will be contingent on the need for compliance with such Export Control Laws.
