Senior Avionics Electrical Engineer

Redondo Beach · Full-time

$140K–$180K

Series D · $308M · 21d ago On board since 2d ago
As a Senior Avionics Electrical Engineer, you will design, test, build, and deliver the electrical systems that power, control, and operate our spacecraft. Your work will span flight-critical hardware including electromechanical actuators, power conversion and distribution, batteries, solar power systems, motor controls, sensors, and embedded control electronics.

You will own hardware from architecture sketches and first-principles design through bring-up, qualification, vehicle integration, and flight, with broad technical scope and extreme ownership. You will work with experts across propulsion, GNC, mechanisms, software, structures, thermal, and systems engineering to solve multidisciplinary spacecraft problems and make trades that directly affect performance, reliability, mass, power, and mission capability.

This is an opportunity to work with some of the best engineers in the industry on difficult, consequential problems - and take spacecraft systems from a whiteboard to hardware operating in space.

Responsibilities

  • Develop circuit boards for spacecraft, with an emphasis on analog, digital or control electronics
  • Contribute to new spacecraft avionics architecture trade
  • Perform rigorous analyses and simulations of avionics devices and systems
  • Act as the Responsible Engineering authority for your hardware, owning your design from board bring-up and debugging in the lab through qualification and flight operations
  • Define hardware interfaces and verify requirements
  • Establish and maintain high technical standards and mentor less experienced engineers
  • Partner with firmware, software, mechanical, manufacturing and test teams

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years professional experience designing analog, power, or control electronics for spacecraft or similar vehicles
  • Proficiency with electronics component selection, analysis, simulation, schematics, and layout
  • Experience troubleshooting electronics problems at the board level or system level
  • Desire to improve team processes and train other team members
  • Ability to work autonomously, communicate clearly, and collaborate across engineering disciplines

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Passion for spacecraft development and solving challenging engineering problems where reliability matters
  • 2+ years of experience with Altium Designer
  • Strong fundamentals in analog, power, and control electronics
  • Experience developing new electronic hardware from architecture through test and production
  • Experience designing and debugging power converters, motor drives, control loops, sensors, signal conditioning, or mixed-signal electronics
  • Strong understanding of circuit topology selection, component tradeoffs, stability, efficiency, and fault tolerance
  • Experience with PCB design and layout, including power, analog, or high-speed applications
  • Hands-on experience with modeling, simulation, laboratory testing, and hardware bring-up
  • Familiarity with EMI/EMC, reliability, FMEA, and design for harsh or high-reliability environments
  • Experience with batteries, power distribution, magnetics, high-voltage electronics, or spacecraft power systems
  • Experience automating analysis, simulation, or test using scripting or software tools
  • Demonstrated ability to solve difficult technical problems with limited time, resources, and precedent
  • Experience in a startup or agile development environment
