Have your AI draft the answers and brief you on Ultra.tech→Why join Ultra.tech?
This could be huge if packing lines in e-commerce warehouses become robot work, and the retailers shipping through them rely on that. Ultra.tech, a New York warehouse robotics company, builds the OP1 to pack and seal mailers. Backed by Y Combinator and Pioneer Fund, its $57M round beats 84% of same-stage rounds, and 16 open roles on a team of 1-10 mean the early seats are still open.
JustBacked's take, based on Ultra.tech's own site and its funding and hiring data.
About Ultra
Ultra builds industrial AI robots that are working in the real world today. Our robots automate mission-critical warehouse labor end-to-end, starting with e-commerce order packaging. We deploy fast, learn from real production data, and iterate aggressively. We already have a quickly growing number of revenue-generating robots operating in U.S. warehouses, and are now scaling towards thousands of deployments over the next few years. Our mission is simple: build the world's most useful and deployable robot.WARNING: Robotics is not for the faint of heart. There are no silver bullets here. It is tiresome, unglamorous, and at times brutal work. The only way out is through, and the only way through is treacherous and unknown. Success will require teamwork - so we are building a world-class team to tackle some of the most exciting problems out there. We hope you join us.
The Role
You'll be the technical program manager for our deployed robot fleet and the link between engineering and the people running robots in the field. When something goes wrong, you make sure it gets understood, owned, fixed, and tested before the fix ships.
This is a hands-on senior role. Half of it is running the program: triage, priorities, owners, and follow-through. The other half is technical debugging at the bench and in the terminal, on failures that cross software, firmware, electrical hardware, and networking.
Your primary metric is increasing mean time between interventions (MTBI) and mean time between failures (MTBF) across the fleet, because that is what our customers feel.
You'll also bring systems engineering discipline to the team, introducing practices like DFMEA and teaching others how to use them.
What You'll Do
Program management
- Own intake, triage, and prioritization of fleet issues, and drive corrective actions to verified closure.
- Run the fleet reliability cadence: issue reviews, failure trends, and tracking across hardware, software, and manufacturing.
- Put lightweight systems in place for incident reviews, FRACAS, and release readiness.
- Lead DFMEAs on robot subsystems to surface failure modes and stack-rank them by severity, frequency, and detectability.
- Use fleet data to find recurring failure patterns and turn them into prioritized engineering work with clear owners.
- Define the diagnostics and failure coverage we require from suppliers, and feed reliability lessons into next-generation designs.
- Work with the support team to understand their day-to-day interventions, and cut both support workload and customer interventions.
Technical debugging and test
- Lead investigations of complex, intermittent failures from first report to proven root cause.
- Diagnose electrical issues on Ethernet, CAN, USB, power, and signal integrity using scopes, analyzers, and logs.
- Debug firmware behavior, onboard compute problems such as resets, crashes, and driver faults, and camera dropouts or instability.
- Work with our firmware and electrical engineers to develop solutions, then deploy and verify fixes across the fleet.
- Bridge software and hardware teams on shared interfaces such as CAN adapters, USB, and supplier motor firmware, so each side has the context it needs.
- Build test benches and regression tests that reproduce field conditions, and act as the first line of defense before releases reach the fleet.
- Improve logging, health checks, and remote diagnostics so failures are easier to detect and explain.
- Support bring-up of new hardware releases, catching interface problems before they reach production or the field.
What You Bring
- 8+ years integrating, testing, or supporting complex electromechanical systems, ideally in automotive, robotics, or industrial equipment.
- A track record of running technical programs across engineering and production or field teams.
- Experience building test systems such as manufacturing test stations or hardware-in-the-loop rigs.
- Strong Linux and scripting skills for diagnostics and test automation.
- Hands-on skill with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and communication adapters, and comfort reading schematics.
- Experience leading DFMEAs and other structured reliability methods such as 8D or FRACAS, and an interest in teaching them to others.
- A methodical, data-driven approach to root cause, and clear communication with engineering, operations, and leadership.
