Startup salaries by funding stage

By the JustBacked team · Updated October 2026

Short answer

Across 7,907 US roles with posted pay at venture-backed startups that raised in the last six months, the median salary midpoint is $180K at seed, $185K at Series A, $185K at Series C and $207K at Series D and later. Engineering roles post a median of $205K, and legal roles post the highest at $235K. Pay barely changes from seed to Series C; equity and risk change much more.

Most salary data for startups comes from self-reported surveys. This guide uses something firmer: the pay ranges startups publish in their own job postings. JustBacked reads every open role at venture-backed startups that raised in the last six months, directly from each company's hiring system, so these numbers are only as old as this morning's sync.

What the numbers say

  • Seed to Series C is nearly flat. A Series A startup and a Series C startup post similar base pay for the same kind of role. What changes is how much equity comes with it and how risky the company is.
  • Series D and later pays the most. Late-stage startups compete with public tech companies for experienced hires, and they have the revenue to do it.
  • Role matters more than stage. The gap between role types at the same stage is usually larger than the gap between stages for the same role.
  • Hardware and clinical roles post lower ranges because many are hourly technician, manufacturing or care roles rather than salaried office jobs.

How to use this in a negotiation

  1. Start from the posted range. If the role has one, that is the company's own budget. Offers usually land inside it, and asking for the upper half is reasonable if you meet every requirement.
  2. Compare against the same stage and role. Use the table above, not averages from big public companies.
  3. Price the equity separately. Ask for the number of shares, the total shares outstanding and the strike price, so you can work out what percentage of the company you would own. Our questions to ask before joining a startup covers this.
  4. Know the runway. A startup that just raised can usually afford its posted range. Check when the last round closed on its JustBacked company page.

Method and limits

We include only roles at startups that raised venture money in the last six months, in the US, full-time, with a published USD range. Ranges are as posted by the employer; we don't estimate missing pay. Location mix affects the medians: many roles are in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York, where pay is higher. Sales ranges may be on-target earnings rather than base. Filter the job board by posted pay to see the roles behind any number here.

Questions

Do later-stage startups pay more?
A little, at the median. Across US roles with posted pay, the midpoint at seed-stage startups is $180K and at Series D and later it is $207K, about 15% higher. Series A, B and C sit close together in between. The bigger difference between stages is equity and risk, not base salary.
Are these salaries base pay or total compensation?
Base pay. They are the salary ranges employers publish in their job postings, which almost never include equity, bonus or commission. For sales roles with commission, the posted range is often on-target earnings, so treat sales numbers as less comparable.
Why do so many startup job posts include a salary range?
Pay transparency laws in several US states, including California, Colorado, New York and Washington, require employers above a size threshold to publish a pay range in job postings. Many startups now publish ranges everywhere for consistency.
How is the median calculated?
For each US full-time role with a posted USD range, we take the midpoint of the range and annualize hourly (x2,080) and monthly (x12) pay. We then take the median per role type and funding stage, showing a cell only when it has at least 20 roles. Right now that covers 7,907 of 11,898 US roles on the board.
How often is this updated?
Daily. The numbers come straight from the live JustBacked board, which reads each startup's own hiring system every day and drops roles as soon as they close.
